Jill Scott is the only child from her mom Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia the state of Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. Since she was the only child Scott was also raised with her grandmother, who was also maternal. Scott was a student at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating, she attended Temple University. In between two job opportunities, she studied secondary education. She hoped to be an high school English teacher. This dream however, was in vain when she left school after three years of studying and becoming an aide to teachers. Following her first gigs doing live poetry shows, she eventually teamed up Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their collaboration song, was composed by the duo. In the Roots performance, she declared her artist status. Then, she began collaboration with other musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She gained more knowledge of the stage when she appeared in the Canada tour of Broadway show Rent. She was signed by the label's first artist.
